Work starts on new puffin crossing in Ellesmere

Press release - 31 July 2007

Shropshire County Council has started work on a new puffin crossing as part of its ‘Safer Routes to School’ work with Ellesmere Primary School.

The work, funded by the county council, includes a new puffin crossing on Elson Road, wider pavements and surfacing of the road.

Work on the pavements started earlier this month, but the majority of the works on the road will take place during the school holidays in order to minimise any disruption. Work is expected to be completed by 17 August.

To enable these works to be carried out safely there will be a temporary road closure of Trimpley Street between Cambria Avenue and Brownlow Road from 13 to 16 August. Cambria Avenue will remain open, and Trimpley Street will reopen overnight.

Parents, pupils and staff at Ellesmere Primary School have been involved in identifying ways to encourage more walking and cycling to school, and highlighted the problems of crossing Elson Road and walking along the narrow pavements to school.

Richard Pallett, Ellesmere Primary School’s head teacher, said: “It is very exciting that work has started on this new pedestrian crossing. Ellesmere Primary School is keen to encourage even more walking to school and link this to other work on healthy lifestyles and sustainability”.
