School meals on the menu at West Mid Show

Press release - 15 June 2007

Visitors to this year’s West Mid Show (23-24 June) in Shrewsbury will be able to learn more about the food being served in Shropshire’s schools – and have a sneak preview of what will be on lunch menus when the new school year begins in September.

It is part of an ongoing campaign by Shropshire County Council’s school meals service to promote the nutritious and locally sourced produce being served to school pupils, and to encourage more children to eat lunch at school.

On Sunday 24 June at 12.30pm cooks from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Castlefields, Shrewsbury, and St Peters CE (Controlled) Primary School in Wem, will be staging a cooking demonstration in the show’s food tent, where they will be serving up just some of the foods that children can expect to see on their plates next term.

And throughout both days, in the education tent, representatives of the county council’s school meals and education teams will join members of Shropshire Primary Care Trust and the Shropshire Family Food Group to answer questions parents may have about school meals and healthy eating.

Bill Campbell, Operations manager with Shropshire County Council’s school meals service, said: “This will be our third year at the West Mid Show and is a great opportunity for parents and children to find out more about the work that is being carried out by the county council and other organisations to improve the health education of Shropshire’s young people.

“We have been working hard for several years to ensure that school meals in Shropshire are of the highest quality and nutritional value, that ingredients are locally sourced, and that we offer a healthy meal that is excellent value for money. We hope parents and children will come and visit us at the show to find out more.”
