New walking bus climbs the steps in Bridgnorth

Shropshire’s latest walking bus started on Wednesday 5 March, with the steepest route so far.

12 pupils from St. Mary’s Bluecoat School in Bridgnorth met outside the Community Hall in the Severn Street car park and walked up the stepped footpath that leads to Morfe Road at the top of the hill.

This new route enables pupils who live in Low Town, or those who live further away and need to come part of the way by car, to meet and share the journey to school.

Julie Potter, Shropshire County Council’s school travel plan advisor, said: “The walking bus gives everyone a bit of exercise on the way to school and the route gives superb views over the town.”

The school produced its first travel plan in 2005, and gained a Silver Award in 2007 for their continued efforts to reduce car use on the school run.

The Walking Bus is led by Annie Lambert who works at the school and will run each Wednesday, as part of a ‘Walk on Wednesday’ initiative.
