Shropshire's roads to be kept clear this Christmas

Shropshire County Council will be working closely with utility companies and ParkRight to keep the county’s roads clear over the busy Christmas period.

The council has agreed with the utility companies that all roadworks in the county’s town centres and the roads leading to them will be subject to an embargo. This means that no roadworks are allowed within these areas between Monday 12 November 2007 and Monday 7 January 2008.

Emergency works will not be included in this embargo.

And to ease the problems caused by inconsiderate parking, ParkRight is set to extend its patrol times from Monday 12 November to allow its attendants to enforce the parking restrictions in the town centres during these busier evenings.

It is hoped that this will encourage all motorists to park correctly and reduce any unnecessary disruption.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for the environment, said: "It is always our intention to minimise the disruption caused to road users. We also recognise that, at this time of year, it is important that access to the county’s commercial centres is kept clear. This can only be done by all the utility companies, the County Council, ParkRight and motorists across the county working together.

“Examples of this co-operation are the large schemes in Albrighton, Harlescott, and Bridgnorth which Severn Trent Water and National Grid Gas have moved to avoid this sensitive time of year."

A great deal of work is also constantly being carried out by Shropshire County Council to programme and co-ordinate their own works with other companies, so that different works do not cause disruption in the same areas.
