Press release - 26 June 2007
More than sixty staff from Shropshire County Council and from JDM Accord – the council’s contractors – worked through the night on Monday to clear and reopen roads in the Bridgnorth area, following Monday’s heavy rainfall.
On Monday more than 2,000 sand bags were distributed to local residents and businesses, and overnight three road sweepers and two jetting units were used to clear water, mud and other debris from roads, and to unblock drains.
Staff from the county council’s divisional surveyors’ offices in Hodnet, Shrewsbury and Craven Arms were also drafted in to assist colleagues from the Bridgnorth office.
Brian Bennett, Shropshire County Council’s Assistant Divisional Surveyor for Bridgnorth, said: “We have never experienced anything like this in the past but the response from all those concerned in dealing with this severe flooding has been magnificent. County council staff, together with the police and fire service have worked together in a coordinated and affective way to deal with the flooding
“Given the unprecedented rainfall and flooding over such a wide area, Shropshire County Council and JDM Accord staff provided excellent support to the emergency services in dealing with this incident.”
The clean up work will continue throughout today (Tuesday) and it is hoped that the situation will continue to improve with the dryer weather.
