Road markings for new Burway Bridgež Ludlow

This Sunday (13 April 2008) road marking work will be carried out along Gravel Hill and the top of New Road in Ludlow in preparation for the planned closure of Burway Bridge.

Since the sudden collapse of Burway Bridge during last summer’s exceptionally heavy flooding, traffic into Ludlow along Coronation Avenue has been carried by a temporary, single lane bridge.

From 21 April (2008) onwards, the temporary bridge will be closed to enable work to start on building a new, two lane bridge.

When Burway Bridge is closed, traffic will be signed along other routes, one of which will be into town from the A49 Henley Road Roundabout via Henley Road, Gravel Hill and Station Drive.

In order to improve the flow of traffic along this route, temporary parking restrictions are to be introduced along parts of Gravel Hill.

The traffic priority at the Gravel Hill/ New Road junction is also to be changed making Gravel Hill and Henley Road the through route which will mean that in the future, New Road traffic will have to give way at this junction.

This Sunday, the County Council’s contractor will be working in these areas changing the road markings.

In order to carry out the work, it will be necessary for the working areas to be free of parked cars. 'No parking' cones will therefore be put out on Saturday in preparation.

On Sunday, Severn Trent Water are also scheduled to be working on Gravel Hill under a road closure which is only required for their work. The road marking work will be carried out using stop/go boards to control traffic.

The new Burway Bridge is expected to re-open to traffic, under traffic light control, in late September 2008. Work will then continue to complete the bridge before re-opening to two lane traffic in December 2008.

John Williams, Shropshire County Council’s principal bridge engineer, said: “It is appreciated that the work may cause some inconvenience and we will do all that we reasonably can to finish it as quickly as possible.

“Ludlow will very much remain open for business as usual throughout these works.”
