Local man fulfils dream of becoming a chef

Tim Lewis, from Highley, Bridgnorth, has gained the opportunity to fulfil his dream with the help of Shropshire County Council’s County Training.

Tim had previously worked as a butcher for seven years and had always wanted to train as a chef. He signed up with County Training in October 2007 and, within one week, County Training had found Tim a position as a Trainee Chef at the Oak Room Restaurant, Parlour Halls Hotel, Bridgnorth.

County Training has also helped Tim by assisting in transportation by buying two new tyres for his bike, a fluorescent tabard and lights. County Training has also arranged to pay for a taxi to take Tim home from work for two months whilst he is working later shifts.

Tim said: "I am really appreciative of the support that County Training has given me. It has provided me with the opportunity of working in an area that I have always been interested in."

Councillor Barbara Craig, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, commented: "County Training provides opportunities for many people seeking work in new areas, assisting them to find employment and utilising their exisiting knowledge whilst developing new skills and gaining qualifications through training."

Due to a new contract from the European Social Fund, County Training can access funding to assist sector-specific companies that are recruiting within the Objective 2 area of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. This is a free service to eligible companies.

County Training is also helping Tim to look towards increasing his qualifications through an NVQ.

Mario Sabetta, the Françoise Holder of the Restaurant, commented: "Training is quite intensive but is crucial to him learning the role correctly."
