Shelton Road speed limit success

Press release - 12 June 2007

Shelton Road in Shrewsbury has seen reduced traffic speeds following Shropshire County Council’s successful introduction of a new 40mph speed limit.

A week long survey has shown that traffic is now travelling on average 20% slower than it was before the speed limit was put in place.

National statistics indicate that just a small reduction in speed can have a significant influence in reducing accidents. It is hoped that these encouraging results will have a similar effect along this stretch of road.

The speed limit was introduced in March 2007 as part of a £350,000 scheme to extend the Shelton Road cycle route and improve traffic signals.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “These positive findings demonstrate the effectiveness of this new speed limit in providing a safer environment for the community, and for those who use this stretch of road.”
