Local History Week at Bridgnorth Library

Bridgnorth Library will be holding a Local History Week from Monday 19 to Friday 23 May 2008.

The programme of events at the Local History Centre in the library will include:

  • Family History for All – a talk by Alison Healey from Shropshire Archives.
  • A walk around Bridgnorth guided by Derek Crockson, the town guide.
  • A special opportunity to meet the Local History Centre volunteers who help people with their local enquiries every Friday afternoon in the library.

During the week the library is also appealing for old photographs of Bridgnorth street scenes: the houses and shops, which could be copied and added to the local photographic collection.

“We often get people trying to trace their ancestors and coming to Bridgnorth to see where they lived. We already have lots of information on family history and we have copies of some of the old maps of the town. It would be wonderful if we could match up the people and the places and also have more photographs of where they actually lived” said Senior Librarian Jon Chedgzoy.

The Local History Centre at Bridgnorth Library was set up last year as part of the Discover Shropshire project. This was a joint initiative between the Library Service with Shropshire Archives and Shropshire Museum Service. In Bridgnorth it works closely with the Historical Society and the Northgate Museum. Working together it aims to provide better access to a greater range of services of local history, in local libraries.
