The Community College in Bishop's Castle has been awarded specialist status for Humanities by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
The College was awarded this status because they met the key characteristics set out by the DCSF and they have a proven track record of innovative teaching and excellent results in the Humanities subjects.
Ann Hartley, Cabinet member for children’s services said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the college. The Community College has a well established reputation for excellence in geography and innovative teaching in history and with this special status will enable them to build on this success.”
Head teacher, Terry Hunt, said: "We are thrilled that we have been awarded this specialist status. We believe that these subjects have a vital place in the 21st century curriculum. The Community College will continue to provide a broad education at a high standard for all students living in the area. Granting the college specialist Humanities status will enable us to strengthen considerably the education we provide for all students.”
The Community College will now be able to develop Humanities to give an understanding of human values and attitudes, past and present and how society is organised, develops and changes. They will be able to use their specialist status to raise the standards of achievement and quality of teaching and learning in the Humanities for all their students.
This now means that all 22 secondary schools in Shropshire have gained specialist status.
