Scaffolding surrounding The Column in Shrewsbury is being taken down, following the completion of work to restore and repair the statue of Lord Hill that stands on top of the monument.
The work, carried out by conservation specialists Taylor Pearce Restoration Services Ltd on behalf of Shropshire County Council, included cleaning, painting and general repairs. The work is carried out every five to six years.
Completed in June 1816 The Column is the largest Grecian Doric column in the world, at 133 feet 6 inches. The statue of Lord Hill is 17 feet tall.
Born near Hawkstone in 1772, the Right Honourable Rowland Lord Hill fought alongside the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo. The Column was erected to recognise his valour in this and other battles.
