Press release - 13 June 2007

The first section of a Shropshire County Council scheme to improve one of the gateways to Shrewsbury has now been completed.

New, high quality Yorkstone paving has been put in place from the bottom of the Dana Steps, up past the Castle Gardens as far as the Jolly Roger Shop.

As a result the safety barriers and fencing have now been removed from this stretch, allowing for people to walk along the newly installed pavement.

The materials used to construct these pavements have been carefully sourced and it is hoped that, once completed the scheme will add to and compliment the surrounding street scene.

The next section of work is now underway on the other side of the road in front of the library, running up towards School Gardens. This relatively short section is expected to remain on programme and should be completed in the next two weeks.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: "We hope that this scheme will greatly contribute to a place where people will want to live, work and visit by providing a unified and high quality gateway to our county town.”
