Hidden history of Shropshire's country houses revealed

The hidden history of Shropshire’s country houses and their involvement with the trans-Atlantic slave trade will be revealed at the Friends of Shropshire Archives annual lecture on Thursday 22 November.

The lecture, by Gareth Williams, will describe the economic dependence on slavery of a range of different Shropshire houses and the families who lived in them. Gareth, who is the Curator at Weston Park, and a highly respected architectural historian, has studied this subject for a number of years. 2007 provides an appropriate time to unveil his research as we commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1807.

The lecture will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 22 November at Shropshire Archives, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury. Tickets cost £3. Places are still available. For further details and to book a place please contact Mrs Pat Kiernan on 01952 252814

The Friends of Shropshire Archives arrange a varied programme of events across the county to support the work of Shropshire County Council’s Shropshire Archives. They also support the service through volunteer help and fund raising.
