Launch of Heronwatch season

Local residents and visitors are invited to come along to the Heronwatch Open Day on Saturday 1 March at the Meres Visitor Centre in Ellesmere, from 11.00am to 3.00pm.

The open day organised by Shropshire County Council Countryside Services and the Ellesmere Heronwatch Group will launch the Heronwatch season which will run until mid-May.

There will be a chance to see the herons and find out how they are coping with the changing climate, using closed-circuit television and telescopes. Visitors will be able to chat to Heronwatch volunteers about how the project works and try out the equipment for themselves.

Councillor Barbara Craig, Cabinet member for community services said: “This is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to Ellesmere to get involved in their local wildlife. The open day will be an excellent opportunity for people to come along and have a go.”

The Heronwatch project has been running for over a decade and volunteers have talked to thousands of visitors about these fascinating birds.

Edward Bevan, Chair of the Group, said: "Watching the herons is a clear example of how easy it is to see wildlife on our doorstep, and to learn more about our environment. A little bit of expert instruction helps to make the experience something to remember.”
