Support for Sutton Farm match day restricted parking zone

Residents from Sutton Farm in Shrewsbury have voted in support of a restricted parking zone to discourage football fans from parking on the streets in this area during match days.

The consultation, carried out by Shropshire County Council, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Shrewsbury Town Football Club, invited four areas of the town to have their say about measures to discourage supporter parking on residential streets around the New Meadow Stadium.

Sutton Farm was the only area to respond favourably to such a zone, with over 62 per cent responding and over 73 per cent in favour. This scheme will now go forward to be implemented and is expected to be in place later this summer, subject to Department for Transport approval.

Residents from Meole Village, Meole Esate and Belle Vue were largely not in support for a restricted parking zone, therefore these areas will not be included in the scheme.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “We are pleased with the level of support for this scheme from residents in the Sutton Farm area.

“We hope that these measures will help to prevent the high volume of supporter parking in these streets and encourage greater use of alternative transport such as Park & Ride facilities.”

The criteria for taking forward a restricted parking scheme required a 30% response rate and 60% of those needed to be in favour.
