Press release - 26 June 2007
Schools to serve Wimbledon lunch menu
Shropshire’s primary schools will be marking the Wimbledon tennis championships by serving up a special lunch menu next Thursday (5 July).
And children eating lunch in school that day will also be able to enter a competition for the chance to win a tennis racket.
The summer-themed menu offers a range of nutritious food, including coronation chicken and salad wrap or hot pizza baguette, served with buttered new potatoes or savoury rice, minted peas and cauliflower, and salad. A vegetarian option of quorn coronation and salad wrap will also be available.
And in keeping with the Wimbledon theme, the puddings on offer include strawberry shortbread layer, decorated with strawberries and cream, plus strawberry yoghurts, as well as fruit platter and lemon cheesecake.
Ann Hirst, primary schools area manager with Shropshire County Council’s school meals service, said: “Our primary school cooks will be giving children the chance to mark the start of summer and the end of Wimbledon by serving up this tasty and nutritious menu. I’m delighted that we can also offer children eating lunch on 5 July the chance to win a tennis racket - which may help them to become a Wimbledon star of the future!”
The 2007 Wimbledon tennis championships run from yesterday (25 June) to 8 July.
