Press release - 19 September 2007
Shropshire County Council is set to trial new glass fibre road signs in a bid to deter thefts.
The council and its contractors, JDM Accord are trialling these new signs following recent thefts of aluminium signs across the county. It is believed these signs are being stolen for their scrap value.
These new glass fibre signs have a lower scrap value and are therefore less likely to be stolen.
New signs will be introduced on an ad-hoc basis across the county, to replace older signs or those which have been stolen.
Chris Edwards, Shropshire County Council’s head of network management, said: “The theft of road signs in Shropshire is not only expensive but it also could leave road users in danger and visitors lost. We hope that by trialling these new signs it will discourage these thefts.”
Signs are to be monitored to ensure their effectiveness.
