Shropshire County Council, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Shrewsbury Town Football Club are inviting people to have their say about some proposed restricted parking zones, near the New Meadow Football Stadium in Shrewsbury.
The proposed schemes aim to discourage football fans from parking on residential streets in four areas of the town during match-days. These areas include Sutton Farm, Meole Estate, Meole Village and Belle Vue.
If the proposals are met with a favourable response, residents could obtain a parking permit for a proposed cost of £5 to park on the road in these areas during match days.
These measures aim to prevent the high volume of supporter parking near the stadium, with less visual impact than conventional restricted parking measures, and to encourage greater use of alternative transport such as Park & Ride facilities.
John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “We very much welcome your views about the proposed restricted parking zone on match days.
“We hope that this scheme will resolve the issue of indiscriminate parking by those visiting the stadium, whilst making a major contribution to the safety of local residents.”
Keith Sayfritz, Shrewsbury Town Football club’s vice-chairman and chairman of the liaison group, said: “The club have been working closely with the county and borough councils to find a solution to prevent indiscriminate parking in the residential areas surrounding the stadium. The concept of the proposed zones has the unanimous support of all parties represented in the liaison group and I believe that it is vitally important that residents in these areas take the opportunity to make their views known on, what we believe is an extremely important issue”.
Shropshire County Council will send out letters to those affected by the proposals to capture their views.
