You are invited to discover an exciting educational experience at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre. A wide range of learning activities, linked closely with the National Curriculum, a purpose-built visitors centre, and an inspirational landscape, await you.
We aim to encourage learning through active participation, enquiry and first-hand observation, thus appealing to a wide range of ages, abilities and interests. Our Education and Learning Team are available to lead activities selected from our flexible programme, or to provide help and advice for organising your own itinerary.
Follow the links on this page to find out more about our led activities, and contact us to request a free Primary Education Pack.
Free pre- and post-visit teaching materials ensure that your visit complements and reinforces classroom learning. Schools have the use of a dedicated classroom and 30+ acres of land, in addition to the centre’s own permanent exhibition.
Opening times
Tuesday thru Sunday from 10am - 4pm, Wednesday until 7pm
Organised activity rates
If you choose an option from our diverse programme of activities charges are on a sliding scale based on the number of children in your group:
- 25 children or less - £75
- 26 to 35 children (or one class, whichever number is larger) - £95
- 36 to 50 children - £155
- 51 to 70 children - £200
This charge includes the leadership of one of our Education and Learning Team and pre- and post-visit teaching suggestions. Where groups exceed 35 children, they will be split into two for the day and each will be led by one of our team. There are a few exceptions to this pricing structure - for example, where health and safety considerations mean numbers need to be more limited. Where this applies is clearly stated in the activity details which can be found by following the links on this page.
Secret Hills Exhibition
Take a fascinating journey through Shropshire's past; meet a mammoth; explore an Iron Age roundhouse; and take off with our film panorama that drifts across the local landscape like a hot air balloon. Focus tasks will also challenge the children during their time in the exhibition.
Free to any school booking a led activity, otherwise £2.75 per child aged five or over; one adult to every ten children free of charge, additional adults £3.25.
Secondary schools, special educational needs (SEN) and adult groups with learning difficulties
Many of our activities for primary schools can be adapted for lower KS3 groups. We are happy to work with individual schools to enable them to achieve their intended aims and objectives for a visit.
We also have a selection of activities suitable for SEN groups and adult groups with learning difficulties. Follow the link on this page to find out more.
Outreach
We have a small but expanding number of outreach activities suitable for both the classroom and after-school clubs or other groups. Follow the Outreach link to find out more.
