Schemes of work for Design and Technology kits

These kits have been put together to make the collating of tools and materials required to follow some of the most popular units in the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) / Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) Design and Technology Scheme of Work simpler.

They have been designed in two parts. Both parts are ideally required to complete the unit successfully and make the most of the design process;

  • Material quantities required for building a basic product. These are designed so that a basic product can be built and one should be ordered for every product that is to be made i.e. if a class of 30 is making one each order 30 or, if the children are working in pairs order 15.
  • Material quantities shared between the class. This pack is additional to the basic product pack and gives additional resources so that variations in the product can be achieved and the design process enhanced. An example of this is in the Vehicles unit where different sized wheels are included so that children can be encouraged to see the effect that a change in the wheel size can have on the product design. Artstraws are also included so a different method of attaching the wheels can be explored. There are also additional materials included that it wouldn't be appropriate for each child to have but need to be made available to the class i.e. masking tape. These packs should be ordered for every class that is going to build the product.

All you need to do is to tell us which unit(s) you are doing, the number of products to be made and the number of classes involved. We have also listed the tools that may be required to help construct products in the unit. These are not supplied with the kit and should be ordered separately if required.

NB A risk assessment should be undertaken on all the tools and materials listed prior to children’s activities.

The catalogue and order form are attached as PDF documents.
