Shropshire Council has administered the Shropshire Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) on behalf of Defra for the past four financial years, granting over 40 projects county wide over £400,000 to achieve a wide range of environmental and sustainability outcomes. Total project value over the three years has exceeded £1 million.
We are administering the £100,000 fund again for financial year 09/10 and have now allocated all funds. This grant monies is to eligible groups under Objective 4 of the scheme – “compensating communities for the effects of aggregates extraction”.
The following projects have been allocated funding in this financial year;
- South Shropshire Furniture Scheme, Sharing the Load
- Shropshire Council Parks and Countryside
- Rea Valley Environmental Network, Rea Valley Cycleway Feasibility Study (to be confirmed)
- Oswestry Community Action, Transport to Nature
- The Hive Music and Media Centre, Rural Reel (Music and Media project)
- Marches Energy Agency, Shropshire Climate Change Schools
- Sustainable Wenlock, Sustainability Package
- Fordhall Organic Farm, Promotion of Access and Use of Community Asset
- Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Weaving at Wild Wood Lane
- Stapleton Village Hall, Village Hall Garden Regeneration
- Market Drayton Taste of the Town, Promotion of Community Food
- Hope Village Hall, Stage Enhancement
- Small Woods Association, National Coppice Apprenticeship Scheme (Telford and Wrekin Project)

We are unable to comment on the future of ALSF in Shropshire, information will be updated on this page when details are know; likely to be early 2010. For future information, the map of eligible areas and guidance notes are available for download on this page. If you are considering applying for funding, please ensure your project is within an eligible area shown on the map and meets all the criteria laid out in the guidance notes. Projects are appraised and scored on the criteria outlined in the guidance notes before selection and approval by a board. Funding was available in 2 categories, upto £20,000 with evidence of 40% match funding or upto £3,000 with no match funding. Please note, there is only one application form for both categories, you must specify on the form which fund you are applying for. Applications from Telford and Wrekin apply in the same way through Shropshire Council, please note the Telford and Wrekin fund allocation is £10,000 only so maximum application amount is £10,000 with a 40% match.
Projects who have funding allocated must be aware that, funding may not be carried over from financial year 09/10 to financial year 10/11. The deadline for final claims for funds will be 18 February 2010.
