Climate change projects

Shropshire Council works closely with Marches Energy Agency (MEA) and a variety partners on a wide range of climate change projects.

SECHURBA - Sustainable Energy Communities in Historic URBan Areas

Shropshire Council is a partner on this project with a number of other European partners. It is an innovative project, the key objectives is to study and demonstrate sustainable energy intervention in historic urban areas and buildings, respecting culture, heritage and local character. Shrewsbury has been chosen as the location for this project in the UK.

This is a new project and the website link on this page provides more information.

Important aspects of the SECHURBA project include:

  • Engagement with the local community to establish Historic Community Climate Change Strategies as a route map for dealing with the pressures of climate change and cultural preservation.
  • Engagement with key actors including planning authorities, policy makers and installers and highlighting the opportunities that exist in using current technology to promote a reduction in energy and co2 emissions in traditionally sensitive areas.
  • To build an intelligent application tool to enable effective and appropriate renewable energy and energy efficiency advice to be generated for historic buildings and communities.
  • To identify case studies for improvement in a variety of historic buildings and communities, carry out energy audits in all case study areas and buildings and identify potential sources of funding for carrying out suggested improvements/installations.

Community Sustainable Energy Programme

Community organisations across Shropshire are being urged to take advantage of a new grant scheme that could make dreams of solar or wind powered buildings a reality. The Big Lottery is currently running the ‘Community Sustainable Energy Programme’, which offers funds to not-for-profit organisations like schools, charities and faith groups for the installation of renewable technology on their buildings. The first step is a feasibility study, which examines the best way on installing the technology on a given building.

Re:think Energy

This is a new project which will be supporting businesses across the regional RRZ area, including much of Shropshire to reduce their carbon emissions.

Re:think Energy seeks to engage with Small Medium Sized Enterprises (SME’s) situated in, or who are benefitting the Rural Regeneration Zone (RRZ) areas of Shropshire, Herefordshire and parts of Worcestershire in order to undertake awareness raising, feasibility services and offer help with funding (for up to 50% of the capital cost investment), to install renewable energy technologies.

RE:think Energy will also help provide openings for business within the RRZ to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the growing low carbon economy through the manufacture, supply and installation of renewable technologies and services. Following this sucessful pilot, RE:think Energy has now been expanded to include the whole of the rural West Midlands. This new and exciting development will be managed by Shropshire Council as leader of a partnership of the other regional shire counties - Herefordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Telford & Wrekin. Please follow the link on this page for more information.

Low Carbon Communities

MEA have been delivering this project in three communities across Shropshire with the aim to try and achieve significant reductions in CO2. They are working with residents, businesses and communities to install insulation, renewable energy technologies and low energy lighting. For more information on this project please follow the link on this page. This project has finished now but residents are continuing to make CO2 reductions in their areas.
