Shropshire County Council is currently involved with a wide range of projects addressing sustainability.

The council aims to lead by example:

  • Working to reduce its climate change emissions through its own energy use.
  • When buying goods and services considering the environmental, social and economic impacts across the life span of the product.
  • Trying to increase its recycling, reduce its wastes and encourage others to do the same.
  • Enabling sustainable or local suppliers to supply of food for school meals helping to develop a successful local economy.
  • Promoting low energy lighting to staff through the Light Fantastic Scheme.

The council aims to educate children and adults through:

  • Running the Mike Sprackling Award Scheme and assisting the Shropshire Rural hub in coordinating the Year of Food and Farming in Education.
  • Integrating sustainable development into the school curriculum, supporting the Ecoschools programme and the Sustainable Schools agenda.
  • Carrying out awareness raising campaigns on issues such as waste minimisation, saving energy and sustainable transport.
  • Working in partnership with other agencies who have direct contact with a range of people.

The council aims to enable residents to live more sustainably by:

  • Working with communities to reduce their impact on climate change.
  • Promoting and developing sustainable transport such as walking, cycling and car-sharing.
  • Supporting local business networks such as Shropshire’s food and drink industry.
  • Administrating the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, a grant scheme for community projects in areas affected by aggregates extraction.
