How we are buying our food sustainably
We have been examining the way in which we buy our food, particularly for school meals. We have been working on improving the way food is bought by different areas of the council and are aiming to increase the efficiency between grower and eater.
National Procurement Strategy for Local Government
The council wanted to link some of its wider policy objectives with the aims of its food procurement, in line with the National Procurement Strategy for Local Government and the Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative (PSFPI). (Please follow link on this page to find out more).
In particular, the council wanted to consider whether it was possible to help to deliver some of its rural regeneration, economic development and climate change policies through its procurement activities.
For more information on the different projects we are involved with please follow the links on this page to Food in Schools or the Increasing Efficiency from Grower to Eater project.
West Midlands Sustainable Food Procurement Officers Network
We are involved with the regional group looking at sustainable food procurement for the public sector, chaired by the West Midlands Food and Farming Team. The network is a sub-group of the Regional Sustainable Development Officers Network, which is hosted by the Government Office West Midlands (GOWM) in Birmingham. The Task Group aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding food procurement. It has previously had input into the new Defra Food Procurement Toolkit, and the regional Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative Training for Procurement Officers in 2005.
