What do we do?
In the Sustainability Group there are currently three full time arboricultural officers (tree specialists). Their responsibilities include helping the County Council to manage its own trees safely (two tree officers are employed specifically to survey trees). They also provide guidelines on planting, management, amenity and tree conservation throughout the county.
How can we help you?
You are welcome to contact the group for information or advice on tree issues. If there is no one who can help directly with your particular request, we will often be able to refer you on to someone who can. For example, you might need to contact your local district or borough council (ask for the tree officer). Alternatively, follow the links to the frequently asked questions (FAQs) page for advice on trees.
Our Tree Safety Policy
On 23 February 2007 Shropshire County Council adopted a Tree Safety Policy. The document describes how we plan to manage risk by the responsible and sustainable management of its trees. We are responsible for large numbers of trees on a variety of sites including over 10,000 in school grounds. We are also indirectly responsible for many other trees through its duty to protect users of the public highway (circa 500,000 trees).
We recognise that its environmental and social responsibility for the management of trees is important. Therefore where any tree or trees are felled as a result of this policy, we will plant a suitable replacement.
