A team of pupils from The Priory School Business and Enterprise College, Shrewsbury enjoyed success at the finals of a national consumer quiz, held in Brighton last Tuesday (30 June).
The Consumer Challenge Quiz, run by Trading Standards services across the country, is an event aimed at young people aged 11 to 18 with special educational needs. It tests their knowledge of consumer related issues, including shopping rights, money matters and food hygiene, in a fun and exciting way
The final of the quiz was held as part of the Trading Standards Institute annual conference. The Priory School represented Shropshire after winning the county heats held in March 2009.
In all 19 teams from all over the country took part in the finals after winning their own local and regional heats.
On the day the Priory School team came second in their heat and made it through to the grand final. Though they weren’t the overall winners, they are first Shropshire team to make it that far in the competition.
David Roberts, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment and economy, said: “I would like to congratulate the pupils from Priory School on reaching this national final, and in doing so well. Although they didn't win overall they certainly did us proud and they are a real credit to their school, and to the county.”
Jo Kilcoyne, Team Leader for Fair Trading and Education with Shropshire Council’s County Public Protection service, said: “Consumer Challenge very much has the ethos that every child is a winner and the team came away not only armed with goodies but also with a greater knowledge of consumer issues. The kids get so much out of the event and the feedback that we have had from teachers in previous years tells us just how their confidence is boosted.”
