Advice for consumers

Consumer Direct

Consumer advice and information in Shropshire is now provided by Consumer Direct West Midlands.

Consumer Direct is a national telephone and online consumer advice service, supported by local authorities in the West Midlands and by Government.

Consumer Direct works in partnership with Local Authority Trading Standards Services offering clear, practical, first level advice and information on a wide range of consumer issues. More complex problems, or complaints requiring further investigation or assistance are referred to Trading Standards or other advice services.

Telephone calls are charged at local rates, which will cost no more than 4p per minute for BT customers (other networks may vary).

The opening hours are:
8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday.
9am to 1pm on Saturday.
Closed on bank holidays and public holidays.
Emails can also be sent to Consumer Direct.

Consumer Direct also has a website which provides advice on:

  • Your rights when buying goods and services.
  • How to make a complaint.
  • How to avoid scams.

Trader Register

The Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Trader has been set up for the benefit of both local consumers and businesses.

You will find details of plumbers, electricians, builders, double glaziers, gardeners, painters and decorators, and many more trades.

Businesses registered with the scheme have all demonstrated their commitment to fair and honest trading practices and delivering good customer service

The project aims to reassure consumers, providing information on employing a trader and working with traders to get things right first time.

Money made clear
The Government has launched Moneymadeclear pilots in the North East and North West to provide in-depth support and guidance on a range of money matters, supporting people with their day to day money questions and worries and equipping them with the ability to manage their finances better now and for the future.
