The majority of people in Shropshire travel to work by car, and in a rural area there will always be journeys which can only be made by car.
However employers and employees can all benefit from measures designed to reduce dependence on the car, and particularly to reduce the number of journeys where the car driver is travelling alone.
Car sharing, working at home, public transport, cycling and walking may all be better options in some situations and will help to reduce traffic congestion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
Employers benefit from a reduced demand for car parking, and from the fact that employees who walk or cycle will be healthier and less stressed. Significant numbers of people do not drive or do not have access to a car, so making sure that your workplace is accessible to everyone means that your recruitment will attract more applicants.
Employers who are required to prepare a Travel Plan as part of a planning application should read the Travel Plan Guidance attached to this page. The guidance is also useful for employers who are not required to produce a travel plan but are interested in reducing car travel to their site. In some instances a Business Travel Grant may be available follow the link on this page for more information.
Employees will save money by car sharing, walking or cycling, in addition to the health benefits. For some people home-working may be an option, which saves time spent on travelling and means that more flexible hours can be worked.
