Workplace travel plan

Travelling to and from work

What is a Workplace Travel Plan?

Workplace Travel Plan or Business Travel Plan, is a package of practical measures designed to help businesses address their transport problems. These plans encourage staff and visitors to choose alternative ways to travel to work, avoiding travelling in a car by themselves.

They also involve the development of a set of measures that focus on the traffic problems of the wider community such as congestion and pollution.

Why do I need a plan?

Congestion and car parking are two main concerns for businesses today. Many businesses, for example, suffer problems with overcrowded car parks - cars can spill out onto neighbouring streets giving you a reputation as a bad neighbour. You may feel that you need to increase you car-parking provision but this is almost certainly not the case. What you should be doing is looking at measures that will reduce the amount of traffic to your site. Society is gearing itself up for greater use of public transport, cycling and walking as well as better use of cars. A forward-looking company needs to be re-assessing its use of transport in the light of these new trends. A workplace travel plan is the ideal tool to help you to do this.

What benefits will a travel plan bring to my business?

Producing a workplace travel plan will:

  • Reduce traffic congestion at your site: By introducing just one simple measure to your organisation, such as a car-sharing scheme, you can make a visible difference to traffic congestion.
  • Help with planning applications: Organisations are often asked to produce travel plans to show how traffic will be managed at the new development.
  • Help improve your company’s image: Developing a travel plan can help your company to promote itself as a good, conscientious employer. It can also enhance your public image.
  • Attract new customers: Your business will be more accessible to households without cars.
