The theme for Walk to School Week this year (18-22 May) was 'Walking Together'. School Travel Plan advisors and Road Safety officers across the West Midlands worked with the departments of health, transport, and children, schools and families, as well as ACT TravelWise and Healthy Schools to bring you one big campaign with a twist……
The twist being puppies!
We were lucky enough to be working with the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind, who provided resource packs to selected Primary Schools in Shropshire which contained lesson plans and interactive activities. There was also activity booklets for the children, stickers, posters, optional sponsorship envelopes and parent leaflets.
Many schools participated in this years Walk to School Week, with children supporting the campaign by walking to and from school as often as they could during the week. Those who lived too far away from the school to walk the whole way participated by;
- parking in a safe place away from the school and walking part of the journey
- catching the bus rather than taking the car
- cycling to school
- completing a walk at school each day, for example, around the playground during break times
The schools who raised over £250, enough to be able to Sponsor a guide dog puppy, included:
- Condover CE Primary
- St Winefride's
Well done everyone!
The benefits of walking to school include better health for participants and a better environment for everyone. Often parking and congestion issues outside schools can also be considerably improved when lots of families make the decision to walk to school.
