Shropshire Council and Broseley Primary School are working together to investigate 'safer routes to school'. A School Travel Plan was adopted in 2006 and this raised a number of safety concerns regarding Dark Lane and identified opportunities for improving paths around the school.
Consultants, Mouchel, investigated these concerns and put forward a number of proposals, including the creation of a new path across the Birch Meadow from the small car park on Cockshutt Lane. Following local consultation, work started on the new path in May 2008. This work was funded by Shropshire Council as part of its 'safer routes to school' programme, and was supported by Bridgnorth District Council.
In June 2008, school children tried out the completed path as part of their 'walk to school' week. The new path is now being promoted for walking to school all year round and for 'park-and-stride'. It connects with new paths within the school site.
Also in 2008, advisory 20mph signs (featuring children's artwork) have been installed on Dark Lane. Shropshire Council is continuing to work with the school to identify ways to improve car parking and pedestrian safety on Dark Lane.
