Shropshire Council is currently working with Ludlow Infant School and Ludlow Junior School to look at ways to encourage more walking and cycling to school, and to improve safety on the school journey.
Both schools have completed School Travel Plans that highlight concerns raised by parents and pupils about pedestrian safety on the journey to school.
Schemes
The following schemes were constructed in April 2009 as part of Shropshire Council’s Safer Routes to School programme:
- Raised junction table on Sandpits Road. A raised junction table with crossing points for pedestrians was constructed at the junction of Sandpits Road, Livesey Road and Whitbread Road. The raised table will help to reduce vehicle speeds at the junction and improve pedestrian safety.
- Uncontrolled crossing and extensions to zigzag markings and guardrails on Downton View. An uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point has been installed on Downton View adjacent to the pedestrian entrance to Ludlow Junior School; the dropped kerbs are supported by an extension to the existing pedestrian guardrail. Additional yellow zigzag markings have been introduced on the carriageway to reduce congestion outside of the school entrance and to improve pedestrian safety.
Traffic and highways engineering scheme
- Zebra crossing, junction realignment and mini roundabout on Henley Road (November 2009). As a separate scheme, a zebra crossing has been installed on Henley Road between the junctions of Sandpits Road and Dodmore Lane. The crossing will improve the safety of school pupils crossing Henley Road and the large number of pedestrians that already cross in this location to access local shops and Ludlow town centre. The scheme also incorporates some realignment to the junctions to reduce vehicle speeds and to provide improved uncontrolled crossing points and a wider footway.
- A new mini roundabout has also been installed at the adjacent Gravel Hill and New Road junction, which incorporates improved uncontrolled pedestrian crossing points. The new mini roundabout will reduce vehicle speeds in advance of the new zebra crossing on the western approach, whilst an electronic vehicle activated sign has been incorporated within the scheme on the eastern approach to the zebra crossing. This will warn motorists if they are exceeding the 30mph speed limit.
- Footways and street lighting have also been improved as part of this scheme which will further increase safety along this busy route to school.
