Safer Routes to School is a capital programme that is co-ordinated by Shropshire County Council with funding from the Local Transport Plan.

Safer Routes to School aims to provide additional support for schools with School Travel Plans and promotes safer, more environmentally sustainable and healthier ways of travelling, especially walking and cycling, to and from school.

To achieve this, we may need to improve conditions (both in safety and the environment) on the main walking and cycling routes to school or around the school entrance. Schemes can include physical measures such as safer pedestrian crossing points, traffic calming, signs or footway improvements.

Schools must have developed a Travel Plan and have requested highway improvements to be considered for funding from the Safer Routes to School programme. The highway measures requested should reflect a need to improve safety or encourage more environmentally sustainable travel to school.

For more information, follow the link to School Travel Plans and our Sustainable School Travel Strategy or download the pdf of Appendix 2 from the Strategy.
