Ellesmere Primary School has been working together with Shropshire Council to look at school travel issues.
The top safety concerns in school travel surveys were:
- crossing Cambria Avenue (congestion and poor visibility)
- walking along Elson Road (narrow pavements, heavy traffic)
- crossing Elson Road
In the summer of 2007, work started on a new puffin crossing on Elson Road, and the widening of footways between the new crossing and the school. This work was funded from Shropshire Council’s safer routes to school programme and was officially opened by representatives from the school, Shropshire Council and the town council in the autumn.
Advisory 20mph signs were also introduced on Elson Road, featuring artwork by school pupils.
The crossing has enabled the school travel group to promote more walking to school, as well as park and stride. A walking map and advice on using a puffin crossing have also been distributed to all pupils (see pdf attached to this page).
