What is the census?
In England and Wales the census is planned and carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). A census in England and Wales is run every ten years. Every household is asked to complete a census questionnaire. This information is used by ONS to provide population estimates which government, local authorities and other organisations use to fund, plan and deliver public services such as healthcare, education, housing and transport.

Capita are recruiting for a number of census roles on behalf of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), many of which can be fitted around full-time employment or other commitments.
What are the roles?
Capita are currently recruiting:
Census Collectors
Collectors will be responsible for contacting householders who haven’t yet returned their completed 2011 Census questionnaires. This requires working varied hours including up to 8pm (Monday to Saturday) and between 10am and 4pm (Sunday). To help them carry out this work to the high standard required, they will receive detailed instructions and be fully trained. They will be part of a team reporting to a census coordinator while carrying out this role. The post involves working outside and visiting a number of residential premises within a set area. Census collectors will also have a bag containing spare questionnaires and other supplies which they will have to keep with them while working.
Pay: hourly rate of between £7.41 and £10.42.
Duration: Full time posts (around 37 hours per week), part time posts (approximately 25 hours per week) and very part time posts (approximately 15 hours per week) are available.
Census Coverage Survey Interviewers
CCS interviewers will carry out short doorstep interviews with householders. They will each work with another interviewer to locate all the households in their designated area before conducting a doorstep interview with a resident of each household.
Pay: hourly rate of between £8.02 and £10.42.
Duration: varying hours between 9 May 2011 to 10 June 2011.
