Shropshire Council has signed up to a new national voluntary code of practice that aims to help local authorities to provide the best possible waste and recycling services to local residents.
At their meeting yesterday (3 February), the council’s Cabinet members agreed to sign up to the Waste Collection Commitment, which has been developed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) following comprehensive market research into what constitutes a good refuse and recycling service.
The key themes emerging from this research were developed into a set of ten principles that define good collection services and which can be applied in any area.
Having signed up to the Commitment, Shropshire Council has now agreed to abide by these ten principles, which are:
1. We will explain clearly what services residents can expect to receive.
2. We will provide regular collections.
3. We will provide a reliable collection service.
4. We will consider any special requests that individual households may have
5. We will design our services and carry out collections in a way that doesn’t
produce litter.
6. We will collect as many materials for recycling as we can and explain what happens to them.
7. We will explain clearly what our service rules are and the reasons for them
8. We will tell residents in good time if we have to make changes to their services, even temporarily.
9. We will respond to complaints we receive about our services.
10. We will tell our residents about this commitment to collecting waste.
Councillor David Roberts, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment and economy, said: “I’m very happy that we have been able to join a number of other councils in signing up to the Waste Collection Commitment. By doing so we have committed to delivering consistent, value for money, high quality waste and recycling services that meet the needs of local residents – and shown that the needs of residents are central to the design and delivery of our waste and recycling collection services.”
Shropshire Council will now be working with its waste contractor Veolia Environmental Services to ensure that the ten principles are met.
More information about the Waste Collection Commitment and its ten principles, will be available shortly on this site.
WRAP is currently in the process of requesting that all local authorities responsible for waste collection sign up to the Collection Commitment.
