Rise in Shropshire’s recycling rate

Residents in the Shropshire Council area recycled or composted 47.57 per cent of their household waste in the year April 2008 to March 2009, compared to 43.5 per cent in the previous year the latest official Government figures show.

The national average for England was 37.6 per cent.

Within Shropshire, the former South Shropshire District Council had the highest combined recycling and composting figure of 57.45 per cent – making it the fifth best performing council in England.

And in the year 2008/2009 each former district council area of Shropshire improved its performance compared to the previous year. Residents in the former North Shropshire district recycled or composted 51.75 per cent of their household waste, the former Shrewsbury & Atcham borough recorded a figure of 46.95 per cent, the former Oswestry borough 46.14 per cent and the former Bridgnorth district 41.7 per cent.

In total more than 71,500 tonnes of waste produced in the Shropshire Council area in 2008/09 was sent for recycling or composting, an increase of 3,100 tonnes on the previous year. At the same time, the total amount of household waste produced in 2008/09 fell by 6,500 tonnes to 151,291 tonnes – a reduction of 4.2 per cent.

As a result, the amount of household waste being sent to landfill has reduced by 12 per cent - or 10,000 tonnes – with just under 80,000 tonnes landfilled in 2008/09.

Councillor David Roberts, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment and economy, said: “I’m delighted that across the county we are now recycling and composting more than ever, and are well above the national average for England. I would like to thank and congratulate all residents for their efforts – especially those in south Shropshire - and encourage them to keep up the good work as we seek to do even better in the future.”

Donald Macphail, Managing Director of Veolia Environmental Services Shropshire – Shropshire Council’s waste contractors - said: "As a predominantly rural county, composting accounts for a high percentage of our performance. Whilst the majority of residents use the kerbside collection service, there are still some that do not. We would therefore urge all residents to use the kerbside collection service for their paper, glass and cans which will help to further improve recycling rates in Shropshire.”
