Glass recycling

mixed glass image

What glass can currently be recycled?

All glass bottles and jars (rinsed out and with corks and tops removed) can be recycled using the kerbside recycling collection scheme provided by your district or borough council, placed in the bottlebanks at a Household Recycling Centre, or put in one of the many bottlebanks located throughout Shropshire.

Note: Please put blue bottles in with green glass at bottlebanks.

What glass can’t be recycled?

  • Window glass
  • Glassware
  • Light bulbs (except fluorescent tubes which can be recycled at Household Recycling Centres)
  • Glass ovenware and ceramics

Glass bottles and jars from public houses, restaurants and other businesses should be disposed of as trade waste – it cannot be accepted at household recycling centres

What happens to the glass bottles and jars?

It’s made into new bottles and jars in glass furnaces in South Yorkshire.

Did you know?

  • Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100 watt light bulb for nearly an hour. (Source www.britglass.co.uk)
  • Glass can be recycled endlessly with no loss of quality.
  • In 2004/5, Shropshire residents recycled 2869 tonnes of glass – the equivalent of over 5 million wine bottles or over 10 million jam jars!
