Textiles recycling

mixed textiles image

What textiles can be recycled?

Charity shops usually welcome donations of clothes and textiles suitable for resale. Kerbside recycling collections may also accept textiles, and some charities also provide occasional household collections.

There are textile banks at each of the household recycling centres and at other locations throughout Shropshire for the following :

  • clean clothing
  • towels
  • sheets and blankets
  • shoes in pairs
  • curtains

Put your textiles in a bag before putting them in the recycling bank.

What textiles can’t currently be recycled?

  • Dirty materials
  • Duvets
  • Pillows
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Leather goods (except shoes)

What happens to the textiles?

The textiles are sorted according to quality and type, and either reused in the UK or abroad, or recycled into cleaning cloths, filling materials etc.

Did you know?

It’s estimated that 75 per cent of recyclable clothing is wasted.
