Are you planning to take any household waste to one of Shropshire Waste Partnership's household recycling centres in a trailer or commercial-type vehicle? If so, you will need to apply for an entry permit.

Who needs a permit?
Any vehicle designed to carry goods, including hired vehicles, and all sizes of trailer, require a permit, as do old-style LandRovers with windows and no seats do require a permit.

Permits will not be issued to any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes.

Who doesn't need a permit?

Private cars can use the sites to dispose of household and garden waste without requiring a permit. This includes estate cars, minibuses, four-wheel drive vehicles, people carriers and camper vans unless modified to carry goods.

How does the permit scheme work?

Entry permits are free and are only available to people living in the Shropshire County Council area. Each permit entitles the applicant to one site visit using a trailer or commercial type vehicle.

Permits will be checked and collected by the site attendant who also checks to make sure that the waste is from your home.

A permit doesn't entitle you to tip or recycle trade waste and you may be asked to complete a written declaration about the waste and its origin. If the attendant thinks that it might be trade waste, an officer from Shropshire Waste Partnership will be asked to make further enquiries.

Why have permits?
The permits are intended to help prevent the illegal use of the sites for the disposal of trade waste.

The sites cannot accept any commercial or industrial waste, or any waste carried for commercial gain. Anyone who tips this type of waste at the sites is breaking the law and can be prosecuted.

How do I get a permit?

You can apply for a recycling centre entry permit by:

  • completing the online form
  • printing and completing the PDF form attached to this page and posting it to us (see contact button for our address)
  • calling Shropshire Waste Partnership on 0845 678 9009

Once your application has been received, we will post the permits to you.

You must apply in advance for permits, which are normally issued in batches of 15 for a vehicle or trailer owned by the applicant, or in batches of five for borrowed or hired vehicles and trailers.

Permits cannot be issued at household recycling centres.

Important note
The vehicle must be driven by the applicant. Applications cannot be made on behalf of other persons such as traders employed by yourself to undertake work.

Please make sure you follow the link and read the notes before applying for your entry permit.

What if I hire or borrow a vehicle to dispose of household/garden waste at short notice?

You still need to get a permit before you can use the sites.

Telephone Shropshire Waste Partnership on 0845 678 9009. You will be asked for details of the vehicle, for how long you intend to use it and then permits will be issued to you.

Construction/demolition waste
The household recycling centres cannot be used for the disposal of large amounts of construction/demolition waste (quantities of more than a tonne cannot be accepted). This includes any waste produced by works other than normal day to day living e.g. house alterations, driveway reconstruction, garden makeovers etc. We advise you to use a skip service or authorised waste contractor to dispose of the waste.

Remember - if you bring waste to the site in a commercial type vehicle, or with a trailer towed by any type of vehicle without a permit, you will not be allowed to tip your waste. If you tip trade waste at a household waste site you are breaking the law.

Data protection statement
Shropshire Waste Partnership will hold your information in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and will only use it for the purpose of processing your request for an entry permit. It will be retained for a maximum of 2 years, from the receipt of the application.

If you wish to change any of the details in the application form or wish to delete your details then please contact us on 0845 678 9009 or e-mail: customerfirst@shropshire.gov.uk.
