Support to Shropshire Businesses
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME's) are being offered the opportunity to take part in pilot recycling schemes being launched across Shropshire and Telford. The aim of the project is to help local businesses reduce their overheads (and protect the environment). As the cost of landfill grows year on year, businesses could save money now by taking part in this recycling project.
Businesses throughout Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin are benefiting from a Business Resource Efficiency & Waste (BREW) funded programme co-ordinated by Shropshire Council, Telford & Wrekin Council, and Transforming Telford.
Commercial cardboard recycling service
Under this scheme firms are able to recycle 1,000 litres of "clean, uncontaminated cardboard" for £5 per collection. Cardboard is bulky, so businesses who remove this material from their rubbish will significantly reduce their mixed waste. The recycling service is around half the cost of land-filling the same volume of waste, so will help to reduce costs.
After collection by Telford & Wrekin Services (TWS), the cardboard will be taken to Ricoh who compact it into Mill sized bales at their on-site recycling centre. It is subsequently collected by Parry & Evans who send it to various mills for recycling into new cardboard products.
Commercial glass recycling service
Pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants taking part in this project are able to recycle up to 1,000 litres of container glass (bottles and jars) for £5 per collection. This is especially significant to hospitality businesses where glass makes up a significant portion of their mixed waste.
A trial in Oswestry has been undertaken by Veolia Environmental Services. The glass is taken to Veolia’s Battlefield transfer station in Shrewsbury where it is bulked up before being sent to Recresco and finally Quinn Glass at Ellesmere Port for recycling into new glass. Recycling glass in this way makes a big CO2 saving - around 315kgs of CO2 per tonne recycled!
Your business, your environment, your profits!
Evidence shows that businesses that are greener are leaner, so that being more sustainable can mean you can also be more profitable. There are many quick wins that are low cost or indeed cost-free! The project is able to offer free advice over the phone on waste minimisation and effective waste management solutions.
