Fridges and freezers are hazardous waste because they contain CFC's which can harm the environment. As such they must be treated professionally to remove CFC's and then recycled. These days when you buy a new fridge or freezer, the shop is obliged to take your old one away and recycle it.
However you can also recycle fridges and freezers at each of the five main Household Recycling Centres (HRC's) in Shropshire:
- Shrewsbury HRC (Battlefield Enterprise Park)
- Oswestry HRC (Mile Oak Industrial Estate)
- Whitchurch HRC (Waymills Civic Park)
- Craven Arms HRC (off Long Lane)
- Bridgnorth HRC (Stanley Lane)
We also provide (for a charge) a collection service for bulky household items like fridges and freezers.
If the fridge is in full working order you could consider donating it to your local furniture scheme.
What types of fridge and freezer can be recycled?
Any domestic fridges and freezers are accepted at Shropshire's household recycling centres. Just bring it to the HRC (and remember to empty the food out before recycling it).
What can’t be accepted?
Fridges and freezers from a business of any type. Fridges from businesses must be collected and disposed of through a authorised contractor.
What happens to the fridges and freezers?
They are sent to Aquaforce recycling facility in Wolverhampton for recycling. First the CFC gases are safety removed then they are dismantled. Over 80% of the material in each fridge is recycled.
