Notes for users

  • download times - ShropMap makes extensive use of various web technologies. Users with a dial-up connection may find that refreshing and redrawing maps takes a few minutes
  • screen resolution - ShropMap is designed for a resolution of 1024 x 768 or above
  • web browser - ShropMap requires Internet Explorer 5.5 + or Firefox 1.0 +. There are known functionality issues when viewing ShropMap from Google Chrome and Safari browsers, these are currently being worked on.
  • pop-up blockers - If you use a pop-up blocker then you will experience problems with some parts of ShropMap, you are advised to hold down the CTRL key when using the site to allow pop-up windows to open

Overview

When you first open ShropMap you are presented with the default view, this shows a zoomed out county of Shropshire with one layer of information highlighted.

Displaying a service (information layer) on the map

You will need to select the service area you require from the following options on the ShropMap menu:

  • Business
  • Community & leisure
  • Council & democracy
  • Education & learning
  • Environment & planning
  • Health & social care
  • LDF Proposals Map
  • Local facts & figures
  • Travel & roads

You will then need to select the service by highlighting that service you require from the layer menu:

Layers

ShropMap works using layers, Layers are an overlay of data or features onto the map, for example the public libraries layer overlays the location of all public libraries in the county onto the map. More information about a layer can be found by clicking on the layer information link at the top of the list.

To select a layer:
Click on the text to make this the active layer (it will be highlighted in yellow).

Show layer details

    You can view details about any of the features within a layer. For example if you wish to obtain information about a particular library, you would follow these steps:
  • ensure the public libraries layer is selected, by clicking on it (the layer is will be highlighted in yellow)
  • using the mouse, hover over the map, a question mark is displayed as the mouse cursor
  • click on the library you wish to query (more than one library can be selected by clicking and dragging a red box over the various libraries)
  • information about the library is now shown in a separate window
  • you can close or print the window by clicking the relevant buttons

Address search

This tool allows you to search for any address within Shropshire.

  • click the address search button
  • enter a full address or part address (wildcards can be used in the postcode by entering *. SY2 6* will display any postcode beginning with SY2 6)
  • click "click for map" button on the relevant search result
  • a marker will be placed on the map
  • you can zoom in using the zoom in button

Locality/road search

This tool allows you to search for any street, road or place in Shropshire.

  • click locality/road search from the menu
  • enter the road/street name in the search box (wildcards can be used in here ie castle* will display anything beginning with castle)
  • click "click for map" on the relevant search result
  • a marker will be placed on the map
  • you can zoom in using the zoom in button


Map tools

Zooming

Zoom in - Click this button and click on the map or draw an area on the map to zoom in to.
Zoom out - Click this button and click on the map or draw an area on the map to zoom out to.
Zoom bar - For incremental zooming, clicking on the various triangles markers will zoom to a specific scale. The plus and minus buttons will increase and decrease the scale respectfully. The scales are:
1:200k, 1:100k, 1:50k, 1:25k, 1:10k, 1:5k, 1:2.5k
County view - Shows the full extent of the county, useful as a starting point.

Panning

Move map - Used to pan in any direction as follows:

  • click the tool
  • move cursor to the map window (Note: cursor has changed to a four arrowed-cross)
  • click and drag in the desired direction
  • release, the map window will be refreshed

Pan arrows - Useful for quick panning click on any one of the eight arrows around the border will pan in that direction.

County view - The red box shows you where you are on the map in relation to the county but it can also be used for panning, simply click on the area you wish to move to and ShropMap automatically takes you there.

Printing

Provides you with a printable version of the current map as follows:

  • click the print button from the ShropMap tool bar
  • select A4 landscape or portrait
  • select a scale, defaults to current scale
  • type in a title and additional notes 1 and 2 (this information will be displayed at the top of the page)
  • click create print page
  • a new web page is created based on your selections
  • click file and page setup
  • remove any text that is in the header of footer
  • set the page orientation to landscape
  • click ok
  • click file and print

Measure

The measure tool lets you measure the distance between points. This can be useful for planning routes as follows:

  • select the measure tool by clicking on it
  • move on to the map window (note: cursor has changed to a cross-hair)
  • click to select starting point (mote: a new window appears at the top of the map frame)
  • as you move away segment will begin to change, showing the distance from your start point
  • click to complete the line (total distance will now be shown)
  • you can continue to add new segment to the route each time total distance will be updated
  • once you have finished click clear results to clear the display

Clear results

Clears the results obtained from the measure tool.
