Changes to bereavement services during the Coronavirus outbreak

31 March 2020 Last updated at 09:50

Registering a death

All death registration appointments are suspended with immediate effect due to the government requirement that all citizens must stay at home. Emergency legislation should be passed later this week to enable us to take registrations of deaths over the telephone. If you suffer a bereavement and need to register a death, please do not go to hospital, hospice or GP practice to collect the medical certificate of cause of death, your doctor will email this in to Shropshire Registration Service. Please phone the Council on 0345 678 9016. You will be asked for your name and contact details, the name of the deceased, their date of death and place of death, these details will be taken and passed to the registration service and we will contact you as soon as we are able to proceed with a registration.

Funeral gatherings

With immediate effect and until further notice, funeral gatherings within the Chapel at Longden Road Cemetery and within the Service Room/Chapel at Emstrey Crematorium, Shrewsbury, must be limited to those officiating and immediate families only. By immediate families we mean Grandparents, Parents, Siblings, Spouses, Offspring.

Further, we request that the following do not attend a funeral service at the locations referenced above:

  • anyone displaying Covid 19 symptoms
  • anyone who is required to self-isolate
  • anyone who has an underlying health condition

We strongly advise anyone over the age of 70 does not attend

We request for those that do attend, where they are not from the same household that social distancing requirements are strictly adhered to, by social distancing we mean at least a 2 metre gap of separation.

Emstrey Crematorium is able to live stream funeral services to those unable to attend, please enquire via your chosen Funeral Director to arrange this service.

Visiting our cemeteries

Until further notice, Shropshire Council’s active cemeteries, Alberbury, Church Pulverbatch, Great Ness, Minsterley, Westbury and Longden Road Cemetery, Shrewsbury are now closed to the public unless attending a funeral.

At Longden Road Cemetery, the gates will be unlocked 30 minutes prior to a funeral taking place to allow those attending to gain access to the cemetery.

The closure is due to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020 and industry guidance. The closure of the cemeteries outside of arranged funeral times is to protect the on-site staff, funeral directors, officiants and members of the clergy, all of whom have an important role in providing critical services in making arrangements for funerals. Thank you for your cooperation at this difficult time.
