Changes to the births, deaths and marriage service during the Coronavirus outbreak

23 March 2020 Last updated at 12:55

All ceremonies until the end of June 2020 are postponed. For those couples with ceremonies booked for a date on or after the 1 July 2020, we hope to be able to honour the bookings we have with you but will be in touch should anything change. Our plans are that all ceremonies will be rescheduled to a later date in the event that they are unable to proceed.  We would ask that you do not telephone in to our offices at this time as we are overwhelmed.  Please email us at with your enquiry which we will deal with as soon as possible.

Births, deaths and notice of marriage or civil partnership appointments

All appointments are suspended with immediate effect, due to the Government requirement that all citizens must stay at home.  Emergency legislation should be passed later this week to enable us to take registrations of deaths over the telephone, this may or may not apply to births.  If you suffer a bereavement and need to register a death, please do not go to hospital, hospice or GP practice to collect the medical certificate of cause of death, your doctor will email this in to Shropshire Registration Service.  Please telephone in to the Council on the following number 0345 678 9016.  You will be asked for your name and contact details, the name of the deceased, their date of death and place of death, these details will be taken and passed to the registration service and we will contact you as soon as we are able to proceed with a registration.

Citizenship ceremonies

Please note that if you were due to attend a citizenship ceremony during the remainder of March 2020 or April 2020, please consider this event cancelled in line with government advice.  We will be in touch to arrange another date as soon as possible.

Customers would normally be expected to book their citizenship ceremony within three months of being sent an invitation from the Home Office. Due to the current pandemic circumstances UKVI have extended this period to six months and will keep this under constant review. Customers should be advised that no adverse decisions will be made on applications because of delays caused by Coronavirus.

Certificate applications

This service is suspended until further notice.
