Autism and Masking

Aims to: Raise awareness and knowledge of masking and the impact of this for autistic adults. 

Learning objectives:

  • Explore neuro-typical and societal expectations throughout life which can then cause masking to occur.
  • Recognise how masking, camouflaging and compensating can impact on the individual.
  • Examine the different levels of masking.
  • Understand the possible outcomes on identity and mental health.
  • Increase knowledge to better support when the risk of masking conceals the persons true self.

Course content supports the “Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting Autistic People (2019)” - Department of Health& Social Care and the “National strategy for autistic children, young people and adults: (2021 to 2026.)” Course delivery is enhanced through “Expert by experience”, sharing her perspective of autism.

Audience: Individuals working with or supporting autistic adults.
*Open to autistic individuals and those that self-diagnose as autistic and Family Carers.
