Summer Reading Challenge 2019: Space Chase
Are you ready for an out of this world adventure this summer with Space Chase?
Prepare for lift off as we travel across the galaxy on a very special reading mission: it’s the Summer Reading Challenge 2019!
This year, the Rocket family need your help. They live on a satellite station in space and love spending time at their local library on the moon.
But they need your help! The books are disappearing from the Moon Library, and we need to find out where they are going before there are none left…
The Rockets are going on a very important mission. They are going to save the missing books, but they need your help!
Take part in the Summer Reading Challenge and join the Rockets on a chase through space.
How can you take part in the Summer Reading Challenge?
Taking part is simple and easy. All Shropshire Libraries are taking part so all you need to do is sign up at your local library – it’s free!
You’ll be given your very own Space Chase bookmark to get you started on your mission to help the Rocket family.
Read six books or more over the holiday to collect special stickers to add to your folder. Each sticker will reveal clues to save the missing books and complete the Challenge.
If you complete the Challenge you will be rewarded with a medal and a certificate.
What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
The Summer Reading Challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays.
Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.
The Challenge asks 4-11 year olds to borrow and read any six library books over the summer. Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.
The theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
You can sign up at your local library, then read six library books of your choice to complete the Challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way, and it’s FREE to take part!
New for Summer 2019: Arts Award Discover
This year, Shropshire Libraries will also be offering children the opportunity to earn a qualification alongside the Summer Reading Challenge.
Children can sign up to work towards their Arts Award Discover over the summer holidays at the following libraries: Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Ludlow and Bridgnorth.
If successful in this arts challenge, children will receive a certificate from Trinity College London. Sign-up costs just £5 per child.
