Our Highways and Transport service manages the existing highway, leads on new and exciting projects and supports the growth of the county.
Our teams and partners work 365 days a year 24/7, from gritting the roads in winter to managing flooding or dealing with emergencies on the highway. We work with our contractors Kier, and consultants WSP, to provide the best service we can.
In the highway depots our teams are dedicated to making sure that the roads are as safe as possible, working to get any defects fixed, watching the weather for snow, ice and flooding and working with our communities in making sure the streets are clean and safe.
We employ many levels of technical staff, from those starting out and wishing to train, to technicians, engineers and those who have achieved chartership. These jobs cover drainage and water management, traffic engineering and development control, which involves the signing off of development sites and their impact on our roads.
The service also runs and manages large scale projects, including the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP) in partnership with the Marches LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership), internal projects like the transformation of the service, and partnering neighbouring authorities in running transport links. Staff involved in these projects work both in the council and nationally with key stakeholders.
After an extensive transformation exercise the service has many vacancies to fill. This restructure of how we work will ensure that the service can adapt to and meet the changing demands it faces in the years to come, from introducing new technologies to supporting big developments in the county.
Not only are we investing in the county and its transport network and highway infrastructure, but also in our staff, with job-specific training planned, including leadership and business to contracts and technical qualifications.
Whether you like to work developing projects, designing schemes, spending the day outside inspecting the roads, helping developments stay on track, or managing projects or contracts, there are many opportunities for you to build a career with Shropshire Council Highways.
If you want to discuss any of the vacancies with us, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and a member of the team will contact you.
