Could you be a personal assistant (PA)?

The role of a personal assistant (PA) is to support an individual so they can lead as much of an independent life as possible, in their own home. They're usually employed directly by the person who needs the support, but can also be employed by a family member or representative, when the person they're supporting doesn't have the physical or mental capacity to be the employer. People employing PAs are often referred to as 'individual employers'.

The job can be very flexible - you might work for a few hours a week, or several hours each day (or night) and help with a range of tasks such as:

  • Shopping
  • Preparing meals
  • Help with medication
  • Driving, or helping someone get around
  • Supporting family carers when they need a break
  • Personal care, such as washing, dressing and using the toilet

As a PA you're likely to be involved in many aspects of your employer’s life in the home, at leisure or at work. The opportunity to focus directly on the needs of an individual and the diversity of the role is what attracts many people to this type of work.

What skills and qualifications do you need?

The main skill needed is the ability to listen, and a willingness to learn, as most people look for someone who is a good personal fit. It’s not always about previous experience; it's also important to ensure that the person they employ has the right values and skills to do the job. Anyone can be a personal assistant as long as they:

  • Enjoy helping people to live their life in the way they choose
  • Would like to enable others to make a real change to their life
  • Are comfortable working on their own or with other personal assistants as part of a team
  • Have the ability to develop a strong, trusting relationship with their employer
  • Understand they're an employee and not a friend
  • Understand they don't direct the work, but their employer does
