Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort
On Saturday 6 May the nation will be coming together to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort. An extra bank holiday on Monday 8 May will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout Shropshire and further afield to celebrate this historic event.
On Sunday 7 May people are being encouraged to celebrate with The Coronation Big Lunch, at which neighbours and communities across the country can share food and fun together.
On Monday 8 May members of the public will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out, which will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and take part in the work being undertaken to support their local areas.
Street parties
The Coronation Big Lunch could be the perfect time to bring neighbours together with a street party. Our street party page will help you make your plans and guide you through the process. If you’re planning to host a street party, applications to Shropshire Council for road closures have to be submitted at least eight weeks in advance, so by Friday 10 March for Coronation Weekend closures.
Please consult with neighbours and people who will be affected by a street closure before submitting your request as that is an essential part of the process, and failing to do so may result in applications being turned down.

Planning on having licensable activities at your street party like live music and selling alcohol? Apply for a temporary event notice (these cost £21 and must be applied for at least ten days before your event). Find out more and apply on our licensing pages.

The Coronation Big Lunch
The Big Lunch is an annual event which this year celebrates with the coronation. The Big Lunch is an opportunity to celebrate community connections and get to know one another a little better. It will take place on Sunday 7 May and you can register your event here.
Free downloadable resources will soon be available online, and there will be lots of resources to help you to get involved.
Lighting Up The Nation
On Sunday 7 May 2023, a special Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle. Produced, staged and broadcast live by the BBC and BBC Studios, the concert will bring global music icons and contemporary stars together in celebration of the historic occasion.
The centrepiece of the concert, ‘Lighting up the Nation’, will see the country join together in celebration as iconic locations across the United Kingdom are lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.
